Your slate, cleaned, enhanced, and sealed can look even better than the day it was installed.
The technicians at Stone Makeover are trained in dealing with the quirks of slate.
(Be careful if you have a slate floor with colored grout, as this bleach solution could damage the color of that grout.) For tougher stains, mix together peroxide and baking soda into a bubbly. A slate hearth can be made more beautiful and functional by finishing it with a stone sealer. The sealer does not only protect the hearth from stains, it also enhances the color of the slate and makes it more attractive. Step 1 – Choosing a Finishing Material The best way to finish the stone is to seal it with a natural stone sealer. Underneath the hearth stone there is a section of floorboards cut out, so a recess which a little smaller than the dimensions of the slate. The hearth spans this void and sits on top. The installer put some cement down in the void under the stone.
What causes slate to look dull over time?
We're glad you asked. Heavy waxes, finishes, and soap residue can all give slate a lifeless, chalky appearance. As with any other kind of natural stone, slate can chip, crack, and stain with time and use. These problems can all be resolved with proper restoration methods.

Be careful with slate.
Unlike other stone types, slate can be brittle, and as such, overly aggressive restoration methods can cause damage. It simply cannot be approached in the manner as other types of natural stone.
Our Restoration Methods

Our experience with slate has resulted in proven methods of safely restoring, repairing and cleaning slate with stunning, satisfying results.

Stripping
When we remove what's on top of the stone (waxes, finishes, soap residues), the natural beauty of the stone underneath is revealed.
Color Enhancers
While most slate is grey in color, there are natural variations containing green, yellow, brown, purple, blue and red hues. One of the best attributes of slate is how its color can be heightened with a color enhancer. The natural colors pop right off the surface, showcasing the character and charm of this unique stone.
Sealers
Stone Makeover can apply sealers that create the look you want, from a satin/matte finish to a wet-look finish. Sealers also help inhibit stains and make regular cleaning easier.

Did you know?
Slate is a versatile stone. Consider blackboards, pool tables, or the beauty of the slate roofs that dot prestigious institutions and classic homes throughout the world. Inside the home, slate can be found as flooring, countertops, backsplashes, fireplace surrounds and wall cladding. The hardiness and durability of the stone means it holds up well against scratches and heat, with characteristics similar to granite. The uneven (cleft) surface of slate creates a rustic design statement, but it can also be honed smooth for a more modern appearance.

Slate Hearth Repair Kit
We do sell slate hearths here at Castfireplaces and have done so for quite a while, we mainly sell them for gas or electric use only as they are not ideal for solid fuel use due to the fact of how soft the stone is.
It can be cut and slabbed for solid fuel use if anybody really does want one.
Anyway today we have been asked the question how to remove the scratches in the slate hearth caused by dragging the ashpan cover backwards and forwards.
As I previously said slate is very soft so scratches are very common the surface of these hearths it is not from misuse it is just a very soft stone and really cannot be avoided.
All is not lost though we do sell some oil in our care products section which is ideal it is called Slate Oil
applied with a clean wrag and worked into the surface of the slate it makes the scratches blend in and when dry leaves a nice colour to the slate.
If unsure please try on the side or where the hearth will not be seen to colour test as using oil does darken the slate
each bottle has enough to do a hearth or slate surround of normal size and after treatment will also repel water so it will sit on the surface to wipe off.
So if your slate hearth or surround is looking a little tired just order a bottle of oil and in no time all will be looking great again
